A SHORT STORY OF LIFE

Tobacco Prevention Education Program

The Lifetime Cost of Chew

In the United States, nearly 8 million people currently use smokeless tobacco. Every day in the United States, 3,100 people try smokeless tobacco and over 120 become regular users. A majority of smokeless tobacco users begin using before age 18. This phase of life is a period of high risk for experimentation. Use of smokeless tobacco has been found to increase the risk for use of other harmful substances. Consequently, many students benefit from education on risks of tobacco use and strategies for risk avoidance.

The Lifetime Cost of Chew is based on our belief that tobacco use is best prevented in childhood. This program is specifically designed to help children learn about smokeless tobacco and understand the process of addiction. The Lifetime Cost of Chew curriculum is divided into different age groups and mainly focuses on the cost of smokeless tobacco and addiction. Through the teacher-administered curriculum, students should learn about the risks of tobacco use, be encouraged to share these risks with others, and have the support they need to be tobacco free.
